I think you've identified a central problem here. Words are simply taken for granted, not seen as an artistic vehicle but as transparent medium. Many people don't see marble, the materiality of language. The sensory qualities barely come to the surface in a silent reading. In fact, of all art forms, the novel is the weakest in this respect, its artistry the most invisible (to the inattentive reader I mean). Even film is more sensory.

Also: television and radio are "violent" by their natures. What I mean is that where literature absolutely requires participation in the act, these modern media only necessitate that a person allow the stimulus to act upon them. I wonder what effect this has had – as they've become all-consuming – on the overall concept of art as a thing.
