Yes, you're right. It's probably more proper to use genre as meaning the formula, i.e. stock characters, etc. I was trying to stretch the definition of genre to encompass brilliant novels like 1984 in the sci-fi genre. Genre the way you use it, is not simply a form, but the stock version of a form. Strange that there are now stock versions of "literary" novels, i.e. The Lucky Bones. I'd argue that there's a new genre, "literary lite" fiction, which denotes the stock version of literature. Thanks for response. I've enjoyed this exchange.
