I really appreciate the comment that metafiction is "primarily" a literary experience and that the social/political/theoretical wing of postmodern thinking has co-opted too much of literature's reach. Sure, anytime someone or something is represented, some kind of socio-political discourse is happening. But this doesn't mean the literary concerns of a given work have to bow down to it.
