The best compliment I can give American Renaissance is to say that, after readng it, I was prepared to answer nearly every question on my pre-1900 American lit comprehensive exam. It's a remarkable work of criticism -- massive and insightful.

Matthiessen was a windbag. His elitist writing secured in me only an image of his own intellectual security, where he felt that the more esoteric references he placed within his work, the more esteem other would give him.
A poorly organized, and badly worded book.
